The USA is "celebrating" the 8th year of invasion and occupation of Afghanistan. Indeed. In the name of democracy. Is there anyone alive who remembers the decade long intrusion by the USSR? The ruthless and often brutal Soviet Army spent 10 long and bloody years in their "War in Afghanistan". Despite world condemnation for fighting a war that "can't be won", despite the determination of Afghan rebels to resist the invaders forever if necessary, the Russians prevailed. As the US had prevailed in Vietnam. And the US was a kinder and more benign interloper-in the name of democracy.
But after 10 years of failure to win the hearts and minds of the people, the invaders simply withdrew.
And in the end, they left. Lack of resources, reserves, and popular support led them to abandon all hope of victory. They simply left the field, wiser for it.
